History of Riverside Golf Course

Riverside Golf Course has been a treasured part of Janesville since 1924, when the city provided land in Riverside Park for the course due to overwhelming community demand. Citizens rallied together to raise funds and build the initial six-hole layout, demonstrating the deep connection between this course and the community it serves.

In 1926, the course expanded to nine holes as ownership transferred to the city, with low fees keeping golf accessible to all. Two decades later, in 1946, renowned architect Robert Bruce Harris oversaw the expansion to 18 holes, designing the layout with doglegs, varied yardages, and a memorable stretch along the Rock River with dramatic topography.

Today, Riverside stands as one of Wisconsin’s oldest and most beloved municipal courses, recognized by the National Golf Foundation and Golfpass. The course hosts prestigious tournaments including qualifiers for the Ray Fischer Amateur Championship, attracting top Midwest talent. Known for its tree-lined fairways, rolling hills, and challenging yet fun layout, Riverside offers a classic parkland experience with unique river-adjacent holes.

Friends of Riverside Golf Course was established to ensure this century-old community treasure continues to thrive for generations to come.
